A management system that helps to improve the quality of transplant results

Liver transplants have represented a considerable change in treating liver disease, and an improvement to the survival and quality of life of patients with serious terminal liver diseases.

Managing the liver transplant procedure has become a complicated process in which different healthcare professionals participate. Teamwork, standardisation and the definition of best practices and medical-surgical healthcare criteria are fundamental for success

Liver transplants units must guarantee that, throughout the process, certain quality and safety requirements are met. This is in order to achieve improvements to survival, quality of life, patient satisfaction and their family environment, and in the favourable perception that society must have on transplant programmes.

This standard specifies the requirements of a quality management system applied to liver transplant units.

The scope of this standard encompasses the processes involved in the following aspects:

a) Assessment and the inclusion on a waiting list of the liver transplant candidate;

b) Management of the liver transplant waiting list;

c) Outpatient follow-up of patients on the liver transplant waiting list and the prevention and early detection of complications.

d) Assessment of the organ from a donor corpse and acceptance criteria for such;

e) Assessment and selection of the possible living donor;

f) Immediate pre-transplant hospitalisation of the recipient;

g) Immediate pre-transplant hospitalisation of the living donor;

h) Liver transplant surgery; i) Immediate post-operation follow-up in the critical care unit;

j) Immediate post-operation follow-up in hospital units;

k) Out-patient follow-up of the liver transplant and treatment in long-term complications.

Certification in UNE 179008 allows for liver transplant units to demonstrate that they have implemented a quality management system, which covers the experiences and pooling of good practices in this area of the National Transplant Organisation (ONT), regional transplant coordination units, transplant units and scientific societies, all involved in elaborating this standard. It is a system aimed at continual improvement, by assessing the results of the different processes involved in the liver transplant, all with a view to improve the quality of these results.

UNE 179008 Quality management system for liver transplant units can be perfectly integrated with the management system ISO 9001.

Once the Audit process is complete, if the system set up adapts to the requirements of standard UNE 179008 Quality management system for liver transplant units, the organisation obtains:

  • The AENOR Certificate of UNE 179008 Quality management system for liver transplant units.
