CAPSA FOOD, the first dairy company in Spain to receive the "Zero Waste" certification from AENOR in all its factories

26/06/2020

  • This certification recognises organisations that sort 90% the waste they generate to prevent certain items being disposed of at landfill sites.
  • The AENOR Zero Waste certificate is part of the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan launched by the company.

26 June 2020. CAPSA FOOD continues to make progress in its Comprehensive Sustainability Plan (economic, social and environmental), strengthening its commitment to the environment, in this case to reduce the waste from its factories and transform unavoidable waste into value-added products. The actions introduced by the company have allowed it to obtain the AENOR Zero Waste certificate, making it the first dairy company in Spain to receive this recognition.

This certificate is granted to those organisations that can guarantee the recovery of 90% of the waste they generate, thus avoiding landfill and, at the same time contributing to boost circular economy by transforming waste into new raw materials that are introduced into the value chain; thus, taking another step forward in the fight against climate change.

The dairy company has made the Circular Economy a fundamental pillar of its Comprehensive Sustainability Plan, implementing various improvements over the years that have allowed it to achieve the objective of Zero Waste in all CAPSA FOOD factories.

With the optimisation of its production process over the last four years, CAPSA FOOD has managed to minimise food shortfalls and waste. The total amount of waste generated has been reduced by 30%, which represents 4.6 million kilos of waste avoided.

In addition, more than 90% of its waste has been 95% recovered and reused, giving it a second life and transforming it into fertilizers, renewable gas and new materials for other processes.

But the aim of CAPSA FOOD is to move towards a more sustainable tomorrow, developing innovative projects so that the waste from its livestock and factories becomes resources of great added value. The best example is BIOGASTUR, which transforms the slurry and organic waste from its factories into biofertilizers and renewable energies, or the incorporation of ENTOMO AGROINDUSTRIAL to the group's shareholding in 2019, to transform organic waste into high-value products (proteins, chitosan, fats and fertilisers).

CAPSA FOOD continues to work to strengthen its commitment to incorporate integral sustainability throughout the value chain, from the livestock sector where Its unique working method is certified through the Garantía Ganadera mark, to the table, with the rest of the sustainable actions developed by the company in different fields.
