  • It is the first rapid transit system to obtain railway safety certification.
  • The Madrid Metro is strengthening its commitment to safety through these systems.

24 February 2020. — AENOR has certified the Madrid Metro for its Operational Railway Safety Management System, which demonstrates its good practices in this field, as the first rapid transit system to receive this certificate.

It was also received UNE-ISO 22320:2013 certification for its Emergency Management System, which puts it on a par with other bodies belonging to the City Council and the Community of Madrid with which the Madrid Metro usually manages Civil Protection, achieving the highest standards in terms of emergency management.

The CEO of Madrid Metro, Silvia Roldán, received the certificates from AENOR's CEO, Rafael García Meiro.

Metro de Madrid's Railway Safety Management System aims to centralise and organise all the processes related to the safety of suburban trains into a single system, establishing a system for controlling and evaluating operational risks that guarantees the protection of people.

This system also allows it to investigate any incident that may occur as the trains are circulating, as well as inspections that ensure compliance with the regulatory framework and procedures in force, related to operational railway safety, are continually evaluated.

The certificate demonstrates that the Madrid Metro continues to consolidate itself as both a national and international benchmark. It is proof that the Madrid Metro meets the specific requirements defined for the rail sector, and attests to the improved quality and reliability in managing railway safety.

Meanwhile, the Madrid Metro's Emergency Management System seeks to manage the preparation and action to be taken in the event of an emergency, providing an efficient, effective and coordinated response to these situations, in order to minimise the impact of any incident and ensure the provision of the service.

It also includes the investigation of incidents affecting the Metro service and facilities, as well as audits and inspections that ensure the continuous evaluation of compliance with the regulatory framework and procedures in force.

This emergency management system allows them to develop and improve their capacity to provide all types of responses to emergencies of any size, whether it be an incident, a crisis, halted activities or a disaster. Furthermore, they can ensure that the information is true and reliable, establishing information and data management processes. Meanwhile, the establishment of a foundation of coordination and cooperation between the concerned parties minimises misunderstandings, while shared resources are managed more efficiently.

Since 1999, the Madrid Metro has obtained various certificates, passing annual audits with AENOR. In 2018, it was awarded IR certification of its Quality Management System in accordance with the IRIS Standard of the UNIFE, for its Hortaleza-Line 4 depot, putting it at the leading edge of the railway sector in this area.

The extensive set of standards in which the Madrid Metro has been certified reflects its commitment to continual improvements, as well as its efforts and work across all areas. They also provide the possibility to attend to clients that, more and more, require certified suppliers, whilst increasing the ability to boost the company's turnover, improving its own quality systems and building greater trust with its users.
