In 2005, the IRIS Standard was created upon the initiative of UNIFE and with the support of the primary manufacturers and system integrators. The main objective of this Standard is to improve the quality of the supply chain, prevent and/or reduce defects through the implementation of a continuous assessment system that makes it possible to quantify the improvement achieved via a measurement process based on effectiveness levels.
Last July 2023, ISO 22163:2023 was published, a natural evolution of the previous version of the ISO/TS standard of 2017. In addition to complying with the requirements specified in ISO 22163, the document "IRIS Certification® Performance Assessment:2023", published in August 2023, defines the rules and procedures to be followed in order to obtain the IRIS certificate.
The new version of IRIS opens up the possibility for SMEs with a reduced certification scheme to enter this certification. It also expands the certification scope to include other business categories, such as the distribution of railway material, turnkey projects, and the provision of equipment and testing services associated with the railway sector, as well as railway integration activity.
The new certification in IRIS rev04 is active from April 2024, and companies already certified in the previous version will have a set time to transfer their certificate to the new version.
The IRIS certification based on the general standard ISO TS 22163 is applicable to organisations of any size that design, manufacture or maintain railway products.
The structure of the standard ISO TS 22163 is based on the standard UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2015 and a joint audit of both standards is necessary. As the standard ISO TS 22163 is based on ISO 9001:2015, it can be easily integrated with any process management system.
Once the audit process has been successfully completed, if the implemented system meets the requirements of the IRIS standard, the organisation will obtain:
