AENOR has awarded COVAP WELFAIR Animal Welfare™ to the Ibercom cooperative for its production of more than 80,000 Iberian pigs following extensive work undertaken on adapting its farms, a process that has been endorsed following the audit carried out by AENOR, which demonstrates its commitment to animal welfare. Ibercom cooperative of Iberian pigs is the largest producer of this type of animal in the country: almost 10% of the Iberian livestock produced in Spain pass through its facilities.
This certification demonstrates that Ibercom meets the requirements of the Welfair Animal Welfare model™ based on the European Welfare Quality® protocol and designed to harmonise social concerns and market demands to develop reliable systems for monitoring on farms, product information and improvements in animal welfare.
The certification is based on a pioneering model, which, in addition to assessing farms, takes different parameters of animal behaviour into account. These are based on 4 principles: the animal's diet, accommodation, health and behaviour.
The certification award ceremony was attended by José Ignacio Moríñigo, CEO of Ibercom, and Mónica Barroso, AENOR's Director for the Southern Region.
