17 June 2019. The Chairman of Viesgo, Miguel Antoñanzas, received from the Director of AENOR in Cantabria, Gerardo Pelón Cueto, the certification issued to Viesgo Distribución Eléctrica and its subsidiary Begasa for compliance with the ISO 55001 Asset Management standard, the ISO 27001 Information Security standard, and the ISO 22301 Business Continuity standard.
AENOR, an international benchmark in certification, verification, validation, inspection, analysis, training and information services, was the entity responsible for carrying out the certification process.
Viesgo's achievement of obtaining certification under these three standards is unprecedented in the national electricity sector and is the result of a coordinated effort by a team of almost 60 people from the electricity distributor, who have directly integrated the necessary methodologies and have guided their teams to comply with the demanding requirements of these standards.
The implementation and certification of an Asset Management System under ISO 55001:2014 promotes efficient asset management in the organisation, improving services and minimising operational risks, since it improves information for decision-making and ensures compliance of legal requirements.
The Business Continuity Management System has been implemented in order to guarantee the company's critical operations in the event of a contingency. For Viesgo, this means safeguarding the electricity supply and restoring it as soon as possible in the event of a serious incident, thereby minimising the impact. This is a highly significant issue at a time when cybersecurity is a top priority in all countries, especially in services that constitute critical infrastructure.
A certified Information Security system under ISO 27001 contributes to protecting the information and effectively managing its security, guaranteeing compliance of the legal requirements of confidentiality, integrity and availability. Viesgo considers information to be one of its main assets and protecting it is therefore essential to ensure the continuity and development of the business.
This landmark is the culmination of a successful first phase of certifications for the distributor, which in the last four years has also obtained certification under the following additional standards: ISO 9001 on Quality, ISO 14001 on Environment, ISO 10002 on Claims Management, ISO 50001 on Energy Management, and OHSAS 18001 on Occupational Health and Safety.
In the coming years, Viesgo Distribución will continue to strengthen this strategy and aims to achieve recognition for its operational excellence and stakeholder transparency management.
