The Red Sísmica Nacional (National Center for Seismology) receives the ISO 22320 Emergency Management certificate from AENOR

17/09/2021

17 September 2021. The Red Sísmica Nacional (RSN), under the auspicies of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), through the Instituto Geográfico Nacional (National Geographic Institute) (IGN) has obtained the certification AENOR in Emergency Management, which accredits the Institution's ability to provide an effective response in the event of an earthquake or tsunami. This certificate is based on the UNE-EN ISO 22320 Standard for "Protection and Safety of Citizens. Managing Emergencies. Guidelines for incident management", which includes global best practices in the field with the ultimate objective of saving lives and minimising the impact of the incident.

The certificate was presented to the company during an official event attended by Gonzalo Piédrola, AENOR's Director for the Central Region and EMEA, and Lorenzo García Asensio, President of the National Geographic Institute.

The National Seismic Network is charged with detecting and reporting all seismic activity that occurs in Spain. Approximately 6,000 earthquakes are recorded annually in Spain and nearby areas, of which only 300 are felt by the population. The RSN is notifies the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies of earthquakes equal to or larger than 2.5 on the Richter scale and those felt by the population, in case any action is required. In addition to this crucial role, the RSN is responsible, among other things, for providing tsunami warnings, conducting seismic hazard analysis to determine the standards for earthquake-resistant construction, collaborating in the monitoring of nuclear tests, and monitoring seismic activity and its effects on critical infrastructures, such as nuclear power plants, dams, industrial sites, etc

This standard establishes a structure and a process of command and control to ensure the capacity to manage emergencies and to respond to all incidents. It also guarantees that operational information is timely and accurate, and it also defines the bases for coordination and cooperation between the parties involved in the response, taking into account common agreed objectives.
