The Ibercom Cooperative receives AENOR's animal welfare certification, Welfair,™ for more than 80,000 Iberian animals

18/12/2020

18 December 2020. AENOR has granted the animal welfare certification, Welfair, to the Ibercom Cooperative™ for farms totalling more than 80,000 Iberian pigs following extensive work undertaken on adapting its farms, a process that has been endorsed following the audit carried out by AENOR, which thus demonstrates its commitment to animal welfare.

The Director of AENOR in the South Region, Mónica Barroso, said that "our audits have always been characterised by their depth and reliability. We are very pleased and grateful to Ibercom for its courage as this work has been a major challenge given the magnitude of the work to be carried out. Thanks to our team's professionalism and Ibercom's impressive engagement, we have achieved this and in record time".

Ibercom, an Iberian pork cooperative, is the largest farmer of these animals in the country; its farms account for almost 10% of the head of Iberian livestock farmed in Spain and, as José Ignacio Moríñigo, CEO of the cooperative, comments:"although we have only covered 80,000 animals on our farms under the animal welfare standard for the time being, our goal is to reach 100% within 18 months. This certification is one of consumers' biggest current demands, which is why we are sure that this ambitious commitment will generate added value for our livestock farmers".

This certification proves that Ibercom meets the requirements of the Welfair animal welfare model™ based on the European Welfare Quality® protocol and designed to harmonise social concerns and market demands to develop reliable systems for monitoring on farms, product information and improvements in animal welfare.

The certification is based on a pioneering model, which, in addition to assessing farms, takes different parameters of animal behaviour into account. These are based on 4 principles: the animal's diet, accommodation, health and behaviour.
