The Torrejón University Hospital is granted the AENOR Children's Hospitals Humanisation Index certification (IHHI)

11/02/2021

  • The hospital is among the three hospitals with the best score in Spain in the small hospitals category, a result for which it has been awarded the AENOR certification.

11 February 2021. Within the centre's humanisation programme, the Torrejón University Hospital (Madrid), managed by Ribera, has obtained the certificate of AENOR in the Children's Hospitals Humanisation Index (IHHI) certificate, which ranks it among the country's three highest rated centres, together with the Hospital de Hellín (Albacete) and Hospital La Moraleja (Madrid) in the category of small centres. This index is an evaluation tool lead by Fundación ATRESMEDIA for measuring the degree of humanisation of hospital care for paediatric patients.

The process of obtaining IHHI certification involves assessing aspects divided into six blocks: general information, Emergency service, Outpatient service, admissions, other services and specialised Intervention Units. Each of these blocks is in turn divided into different sections, depending on their peculiarities: training, triage, intimacy, pharmacy, operating rooms, etc. After obtaining the certificate, Dr. Hemir Escobar, head of Paediatrics at the Torrejón University Hospital, stated that "this recognition is the result of the team's work philosophy throughout the hospital," and added "for all hospital professionals, humanising the care we provide to our patients is a top priority, regardless of whether they are children or adults."

For her part, Marta Serrano, Health Manager at AENOR, highlighted the importance of implementing care models focused on the patient and their family, and added that IHHI verification generates "knowledge of the key aspects that make up the experience of paediatric patients, as well as that of all the team that has an impact on paediatric care." With regard to the Torrejón University Hospital, she particularly praised the fact that "despite the current pandemic, the hospital has been able to adapt to continue providing care to the children with humanisation criteria."

At the end of November 2020, the IHHI results were presented for a total of 120 public, private and mixed-management hospitals. The report shows that the Humanisation Index for Children's Hospitals in Spain has an average value of 60.64% for large hospitals, 55.76% for medium-sized hospitals and 48.28% for small hospitals. In the small hospital category, particularly noteworthy are the areas of Consultations and Specialised Intervention Units with a score above 90%.

Furthermore, the IHHI Report has widely detected opportunities for improvement in aspects such as increasing Humanisation training for healthcare professionals; continuing with psychological care programmes for hospitalised children and adolescents; and continuously promoting the Specific Units for Adolescents; the Pain Units and Palliative Care Units, areas where the Torrejón University Hospital works permanently.
