  • The Deputy Director General for Healthcare Quality, Alberto Pardo, presented the awards together with the Director of AENOR in the Community of Madrid, Enrique Megia.

16 November The the Hospital Universitario Infanta Cristina has successfully passed the audits of AENOR for the renewal of certification according to the standard ISO 9001 of the hospital's Quality Management System, as well as the monitoring of the hospital's certification. UNE 179003 to its Patient Safety Risk Management System.

The presentation of the certificates took place at the health centre today, Wednesday 16 November, in a ceremony attended by the Deputy Director General for Healthcare Quality of the Madrid Regional Ministry of Health, Alberto Pardo; the Director of AENOR in the Madrid Region, Enrique Megia; and the Managing Director of the hospital, Carlos Mingo.

In his speech, Alberto Pardo underlined the importance of standards such as ISO or UNE, which "help organisations do things systematically, with established records and procedures, and with the aim of making progress in identifying risks and possible areas for improvement". In this regard, the Deputy Director General for Healthcare Quality expressed his thanks for "the commitment of the hospitals of the Community of Madrid to quality and patient safety. Madrid's healthcare system has more than 500 units or departments certified by AENOR, of which the Infanta Cristina University Hospital has 21". The HUIC also holds National Security Scheme accreditation, "the first hospital in Spain to achieve this", as Pardo recalled. Pardo stressed the importance "not only of achieving these certifications, but also of maintaining and revalidating them".

For his part, Enrique Megia, director of AENOR in the Community of Madrid, emphasised that "at AENOR we are committed to society, and the quality of health systems have a direct impact on the care of people. The Infanta Cristina Hospital has been UNE 179003 certified since 2016 and ISO 9001 certified since 2017, reflecting the hospital's commitment to quality and patient safety. The certificates HUIC has renewed will help it to further improve efficiency in clinical practice and reduce risks to patients".

The Quality Management System certifications have been awarded to the Anatomical Pathology, Pharmacy and Patient Care departments, following verification by AENOR auditors that the management system developed and implemented by the hospital in these three departments complies with the requirements for quality, efficiency, safety and continuous improvement established in the ISO 9001 Standard.

For its part, the Risk Management Functional Unit, responsible for proactively and reactively analysing and implementing the necessary means to prevent possible risks to patients, and of which all the hospital's departments form a multidisciplinary part, has revalidated its UNE 179003 certification. A Patient Safety Risk Management system in accordance with the UNE 179003 Standard has a direct impact on improving patient outcomes, both in terms of health and in the effectiveness of clinical actions, by identifying and assessing the risks to which the patient is subjected and thus reducing or eliminating them.

It also helps to improve the management of available resources by reducing the costs of possible adverse events in patient care, and by increasing efficiency in their use. This all leads to increased confidence in the public health system on the part of patients, professionals and society as a whole.

Finally, Carlos Mingo, the hospital's managing director, thanked staff for their efforts, recalling that the maintenance of the ISO 9001 and UNE 179003 certifications "are part of the hospital's commitment to quality and patient safety".
