Campofrío becomes the first meat company to obtain the AENOR Zero Waste certification

  • The seal accredits that more than 90% of the waste generated by the La Bureba factory in Burgos is managed correctly and is revalued, avoiding depositing it as landfill.
  • This certificate represents another step forward in the company's commitment to sustainability as a global strategic framework for the development of its activity.

17 September 2020. Campofrío, a subsidiary company of SIGMA in Europe, has become the first meat company to obtain the Zero Waste certification from AENOR. The entity, currently the only one to issue this certification, has awarded the La Bureba factory in Burgos the mark that accredits that the complex assesses and recycles more than 90% of its waste, preventing its final deposit as landfill.

The Zero Waste certification focuses on reducing waste generation to recognise the impetus for a Circular Economy, which prioritises reuse and recycling, taking advantage of waste to be reused as a raw material for new processes.

To help adapt the operation of its centre to an environmentally sustainable system, the company has collaborated with a specialist consultancy EcoCuadrado and implemented a series of measures, including the introduction of waste source separation so all waste can be reassessed and reused as much as possible. To do this, new equipment has been incorporated into the final cleaning point for new waste fractions and, inside the plant, new intermediate waste points have been created. Similarly, the staff of the La Bureba factory have received the corresponding training on the new Zero Waste certification, as well as on the changes that have been introduced to the plant.

This mark is in addition to the ISO14001 environmental certification already obtained by the La Bureba industrial complex, which represents another step in the Company's commitment to sustainability as a global strategic framework for the development of its activity.
