Road Traffic Safety Management System ISO 39001

Reducing road traffic accidents, a shared responsibility

Road traffic accidents constitute the eighth leading cause of death globally, according to theWHO. The standardISO 39001:2013 helps organisations to reduce and ultimately eliminate the rate and risk of deaths and serious injuries caused by road traffic accidents.

ISO Standard39001 forRoad Safety Management Systems, which are applicable for public and private entities that are involved with the road system, represent a tool that helps organisations to reduce and, eventually, eliminate the occurrence and risk of deaths and serious injuries derived from traffic accidents.

The implementation of a Road Traffic Safety Management System in accordance with ISO 39001 provides three major advantages for organisations:

  • It promotes a safe system approach which has the long-term aim of eradicating deaths and serious injuries caused by road traffic accidents, through encouraging good practices based on the most significant road traffic safety risks.
  • It prevents significant economic costs and loss of profit in the company while improving business productivity and profitability by guaranteeing the highest level of safety for employees.
  • This strengthens its position in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility, adopting the spirit of shared responsibility in Road Safety between the different players in the roadway system.

The Road Traffic Safety Management System focuses on the organisation of Road Traffic Safety goals and targets, and guides the planning of activities to achieve these goals through the Safe System Road Traffic Safety approach.

Some activities of large and small, public and private organisations covered by the road traffic safety management system are:

  • The use of the road system for employees, either in itinere or on a mission, in public or private vehicles, as a passenger or driver, and as a pedestrian or cyclist.
  • The transport of goods and people within the road system, carried out by the organisation or employees from other organisations.
  • Activities that generate traffic in the direction of or from locations controlled or influenced by the organisation, such as supermarkets, schools and popular venues.
  • Services and products related to the road traffic system, such as transport services, management, planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructures, vehicles and related products, and emergency medical response.

Although some organisations may have a limited number of processes related to road traffic safety, these can still be important for reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries.

AENOR offers the ability to get Road Safety Certification along with other management systems, such as ISO 9001, 14001 or 45001, service certifications such as EN 13816 or with the Statutory Audit for Occupational Risk Prevention in a single comprehensive process, which optimises auditing times and costs.

Once the audit has been passed, the organisation will obtain:

  • The Certificate of Road Traffic Safety Management System.
  • the user licence for the AENOR Mark for Road Traffic Safety according to ISO 39001.
