SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit)

Good practice in ethical audit technique

Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit is a non-profit organisation. Its objective is to enable improvements in responsible trade and ethical practices of supply chains all over the world. Its main product is a secure online database, SEDEX, which allows members to store, share and generate reports in four key areas:

  • Labour regulations
  • Occupational risk prevention,
  • The environment and
  • Ethical trade.

Aspects such as decent work (non-forced, legally regulated employment) with a decent salary, fair working hours, non-discriminatory, health and safety at work, etc. are collected in this database.

The major advantage of this audit is that, once a supplier obtains it, it can share it with all its clients without the latter having to audit it as well, nor having to fill in different questionnaires for every supplier.

Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit (SMETA) is an audit methodology with a format of common reports.

These audits are based on:

  • Nine elements of the ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) code, according to the local legislation's measurement criteria.
  • Specific requirements for management systems, right to work, sub-contracting and home working, Pillar 2/Pillar 4.
