European marine equipment market

Access to the European marine equipment market

In the European Union and the European Economic Area, marine equipment must meet the requirements established in Directive 2014/90/EU (MED, Marine Equipment Directive). The technical requirements that must be met by the equipment are established in the international instruments and the testing rules set out in the regulations published by the European Commission.

The MED applies to manufacturers of pressure equipment or their authorised representatives, who are responsible for complying with the requirements.

The wheel mark and the EU Declaration of Conformity ensure the free flow of products in the European Market. In order to market pressure equipment,a notified body, such as AENOR, must assess the conformity of the design and production of marine equipment in accordance with the modules described in the MED.

AENOR is notified by the Directorate-General for Merchant Shipping of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and accredited by the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC) for this certification, in accordance with modules B, D and E.

AENOR's scope of activity in this field is related to marine equipment linked to the testing standard Code PEF 2010 International Code for the application of fire test procedures.

For the manufacturer

  • ECE mark allows unrestricted access to the European market, eliminating trade barriers and allowing for the free movement of products
  • The CE Markis also recognised in other international markets

For the the consumer

  • The CE marking offers a guarantee of protection by demonstrating compliance with the requirements of international instruments (international agreements, resolutions and publication of the IMO, and test regulations)

The procedures of conformity assessment (Modules) are set out in the European Directive 2014/90/EU.

The modules refer to the design and production phases of marine equipment, both of which must be assessed by the notified body.

The surveillance audits of product for the modules based on quality assurance systems can be integrated seamlessly with the ISO 9001 audits
