The occurrence of major incidents always illustrates the importance of an efficient response. A key objective in public and private sectors is to minimise the impact of the consequence arising after natural disasters, involuntary or deliberate incidents, etc. and to improve their capacity to give an appropriate response to the needs of the affected population.

In order to offer an efficient, coordinated response to the different risks derived from these emergencies, it is important to have common, consensual objectives in place when managing the preparation and implementation of these situations.

​UNE-ISO 22320:2013 gathers together the best practices from throughout the world so as to be able to order and monitor organisational structures and procedures, make decisions, provide traceability and manage information.

Organisations that implement an Emergency Management strategy in accordance with UNE-ISO 22320are able to:

  • Developing and improving their capacity to provide all types of response in the event of emergencies of any size, whether it be an incident, a crisis, halted activities or a disaster.
  • Guaranteeing information is true and reliable, establishing information and data management processes.
  • Minimising misunderstandings when establishing a base of coordination and cooperation among the parties involved.
  • More efficienc management of shared resources.

It is applicable to any organisation (private, public, governmental or non-profit) participating in the preparation and responding to incidents in the local, regional, national or international realm.

Emergency management can be carried out with two approaches, based on the scope of action:

  • Organisations professionally dedicated to managing emergency situations in their day to day: healthcare transportation, emergency coordination centres, healthcare services, civilian protection areas, police, etc.
  • Any responsible organisation committed to responding effectively and efficiently in an emergency situation that could arise in their organisation in order to minimise the impact of the incident and ensure operational continuity. For example, shopping centres, industrial centres, etc.​​

Emergency Management certification in accordance with standard UNE-ISO 22320 is fully compatible with and can be integrated into other management systems as it shares management system tools, such as planning, establishing objectives and goals, corrective actions, etc., with these standards. adding the complete perspective in terms of planning and incident response not covered by other traditional management systems.

TRANSINA, a healthcare transport company in the region of Asturias was the first company to receive an AENOR Emergency Management certificate. At the beginning of 2017, around twenty organisations successfully obtained AENOR Emergency Management certification.
