ENplus® Certification of wood pellets for thermal use

Guaranteeing a constant level of quality in pellets

The ENplus certification scheme has been developed by the German Pellet Association and the Austrian Association of Pellet Manufacturers (Pro Pellets Austria).

The European Pellet Council is responsible for the management and rights of the ENplus mark, organised within the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM), which assigns the rights to the national associations of each country. In Spain, the national association is the Spanish Biomass Association (AVEBIOM).

With the ENplus® certification, the holder obtains the backing of an independent body, AENOR, which guarantees that the production and marketing of wood pellets comply with the requirements set out in the ENplus Handbook for the certification of wood pellets for thermal use.

The ENplus certification aims to ensure a constant quality level of the pellets throughout the entire supply chain, including the production phase, marketing, logistics, and delivery to the final consumer.

The ENplus requirements are related to the management of internal quality, through the implementation of regular self-controls, the adaptation of raw materials, the maintenance of facilities, product storage conditions, product shipping, and product labelling. In the certification process, AENOR visits the production facilities as an independent third party to verify compliance with the requirements. During the visit to pellet producers or pellet bagging companies, product samples are taken and sent to an accredited laboratory to analyse the required parameters and to check compliance with the ENplus requirements. According to results of the analysis, the pellets can be classified into three different qualities: ENplus A1, ENplus A2 y ENplusB. The ENplus quality grades are based on the classification established in the Standard UNE-EN ISO 17225-2:2014 Solid biofuels. Specifications and types of fuels. Part 2: Graded wood pellets.

Benefits obtained:

  • It facilitates the opening of new markets.
  • It enables the company to stand out from the competition (through its own logo).
  • It provides guarantees to customers that the pellets comply with the ENplus technical specifications, ensuring consistent pellet quality and a standardised product.

The ENplus certification is aimed at manufacturing and marketing companies of wood pellets for thermal use, as well as companies that provide services related to the use of wood pellets (transportation, delivery, storage, and bagging).
