Certification of due diligence in establishing the legal origin of timber

Ensuring that timber is of legal origin

Regulation 995/2010, better known as Regulation EUTR, entered effect on 3 March 2013. The objective of the Regulation is to prevent illegal timber from being placed on the European Union market. Illegal timber is understood to be any timber that has been harvested in breach of the legislation that applies in the country of origin, that is, the country in which the timber is harvested.

In order to comply with the requirements of the Regulation, agents who place timber or timber products on the European Union market for the first time must implement a due diligence system to confirm the legal origin of the timber placed on the internal market.

AENOR's due diligence system comprises three elements that are inherent to the risk management system established by the European Regulation: access to information, risk assessment and risk reduction. The system also includes requirements for management systems designed to ensure systematic compliance with requirements.
